"When we were looking to move web hosting in April 2009, our primary concern was that we chose a UK provider that was flexible enough for our requirements. On a number of key technical and support-related points you beat Amazon EC2 hands down. Amazon's EC2 doesn't support Windows 2008 R2 at this time. Also, EC2's smallest 64-bit image is too small to run a Windows server, while the next size up is far too big for generic application server or Windows infrastructure tasks.

"We are a leading Danish provider that hosts mobile and SMS solutions, with customers including large private companies, unions, political parties, municipalities, and public bodies. When we needed to replace hardware at our hosting centre, we decided to investigate alternative solutions, including moving our virtual servers to the cloud. It quickly became clear that switching to the cloud would save us a lot of money, given the cost of hardware, electricity, and in particular, maintenance man-hours. We ran tests against six different EU-based cloud providers (including Amazon) to compare the following:
- MySQL response time
- disc copy speed
- network speed
- price
ElasticHosts performed well in all areas, with key advantages including:
- The use of KVM as a virtualization engine. We had already chosen to use KVM ourselves, since it made moving virtual machines between our servers and the provider straightforward.
- Good API, letting us automate daily routines like backup, migrating, and scaling.
- Ability to scale CPU speed, amount of RAM, and size of HDD. Other providers were not as flexible, as most of them made use of fixed plans.
